How to use it

  1. Type the amount in grams or kilos.
  2. The result gives ounces plus the pounds-and-ounces breakdown.
  3. It includes rounding to quarter ounces, which is what recipes use.
  4. It also shows decimal pounds for calculations.

How it is calculated

The reverse conversion, useful when you have metric packaging and an imperial recipe:

ounces = grams / 28.349523125 pounds = grams / 453.59237

The pounds-and-ounces breakdown is what recipes use in practice: nobody writes "1.1 pounds of meat", they write "1 lb 2 oz". The result gives both forms.

Rounding to quarter ounces is deliberate too: kitchen scales and recipes work in fractions of an ounce, not decimals.

Worked example

You have a 500 g packet of pasta:

  • Ounces: 500 / 28.3495 = 17.64 oz
  • In pounds and ounces: 1 lb 1.6 oz
  • In decimal pounds: 1.102 lb

This is why American pasta comes in 16 oz (454 g) boxes and European in 500 g: similar formats that do not quite match.

Good to know

  • 500 g is not a pound. A pound is 453.6 g. That 10 % matters when following a recipe literally.
  • A kilo is 2.2 pounds. Exactly 2.2046.
  • Rounding is fine. In cooking, 17.64 oz becomes "just over a pound" with no consequences.

Frequently asked questions

How many ounces is 500 grams?

17.64 ounces, or 1 lb 1.6 oz. A European 500 g pack is about 10 % larger than an American one-pound pack.

How many ounces is 100 grams?

3.53 ounces. A handy figure to remember: 100 g is a little over three and a half ounces.

How many pounds in a kilo?

2.2046 pounds. For mental arithmetic, 2.2 is plenty.

Why show pounds and ounces separately?

Because that is how quantities are actually expressed: 1 lb 2 oz rather than 1.125 lb.
