How to use it
- Type the temperature your recipe gives.
- Choose whether it is Celsius, Fahrenheit or a gas mark.
- The result gives all three scales plus the nearest dial setting.
- It includes the usual fan-oven adjustment.
How it is calculated
Converting between scales is exact; everything else is convention:
Gas marks are a table, not a formula: Gas 4 is 180 °C, Gas 6 is 200 °C, Gas 1 is 140 °C. The calculator finds the nearest mark and says so when the match is not exact.
The fan-oven reduction is a common recommendation, not a law: usually 20 °C below a conventional oven, though some manufacturers say 15 °C and some ovens already compensate internally. Check your manual.
Worked example
A British recipe calls for 180 °C:
- Fahrenheit: 180 x 9/5 + 32 = 356 °F
- On the dial: 350 °F
- Nearest gas mark: 4
- Fan oven: about 160 °C
180 °C and 350 °F are treated as the same temperature everywhere, and strictly they are 4 degrees apart. In a domestic oven that gap is smaller than the oven's own error.
Good to know
- Your oven lies. Domestic ovens are easily 10-20 °C off the dial. An oven thermometer is cheap and settles it.
- A fan spreads heat, it does not add it. It cooks faster and more evenly, which is why you lower the temperature.
- Shelf position matters. The top and bottom shelves are not at the same temperature, especially without a fan.
- Gas marks are not linear. Gas 1 to 2 is 10 °C; Gas 6 to 7 is twenty.
Frequently asked questions
What is 350 F in Celsius?
176.7 °C, which in practice means setting 175 or 180 °C depending on your dial. It matches gas mark 4.
How much do I reduce for a fan oven?
Usually 20 °C below a conventional oven, though some manufacturers recommend 15 °C and some ovens compensate on their own. Check the manual.
What temperature is gas mark 6?
200 °C, or 400 °F. The scale runs from 1/4 (110 °C) to 9 (240 °C).
Why does my cake bake differently at the same temperature?
Because the real oven temperature and the dial do not always agree, and because shelf position changes the result. An oven thermometer clears it up.
What is the most common oven temperature?
180 °C (350 °F, gas 4) for cakes and most baking; 200-220 °C for bread and roasting; 240 °C or more for pizza.
