Where the cool air goes

  • Windows. Single glazing transmits several times more heat than double glazing with a cavity. It is usually the weakest point in older homes.
  • The roof. On a top floor, the roof takes direct sun all day and is the largest contributor.
  • Infiltration. Gaps around window frames, roller-shutter boxes and service penetrations let hot air in continuously.
  • Thermal bridges. Columns, floor edges and shutter boxes conduct heat even when the wall itself is insulated.

What to do before buying a bigger unit

Going from 9,000 to 12,000 BTU costs money at purchase and on every bill, every summer. Acting on the envelope is often the better investment:

  1. Seal the roller-shutter box, usually the leakiest point in the room.
  2. Fit weather stripping to loose window frames.
  3. Add external shading to exposed windows.
  4. If work is planned anyway, insulate the roof on a top floor.

Insulation also holds the cool in

An easily forgotten detail: insulation does not just reduce the capacity needed, it also lengthens how long the house holds temperature with the unit off. In a well-insulated home the compressor runs fewer hours for the same comfort, and that shows up directly on the bill.
