How much extra material should you buy?
Between 5 and 15 % depending on the material and the job.
As a general rule, 10 % works for almost everything. Drop to 5 % for bulk materials like concrete and sand, and raise to 15 % for awkward layouts or if this is your first project.

Why waste exists
It is not an arbitrary safety margin. Material disappears through four concrete, measurable routes:
- Cuts. Anything that does not fit whole gets cut, and the offcut rarely helps.
- Breakage. Factory defects, transit damage, failed cuts.
- Process. Paint in the tray, mortar in the bucket, adhesive on the trowel.
- Mistakes. Everyone measures something wrong eventually.
When to raise it
- It is your first project of this kind: add 5 points.
- The plan is irregular, with alcoves, columns or niches.
- You are laying diagonally, in herringbone, or with borders.
- The units are large format and expensive to cut.
- The product may be discontinued and you want spares.
When you can lower it
Only with a perfectly rectangular area, a straight layout, cheap material and experienced hands who have planned the cuts. Even then, below 5 % the risk of a second shopping trip outweighs the saving.
Waste is also your spare stock
For materials with a visible finish (tile, flooring, trim), the leftovers are the only realistic way to make a repair a few years on. Ranges get discontinued and shades shift between batches: half a box in the garage is worth more than it cost.
