Tablespoons to grams

The tablespoon is the next measure along, and few recipes use only one.

How to use it

  1. Type how many teaspoons you want to convert.
  2. Pick the ingredient: salt, yeast, spices, cocoa...
  3. Check the size: 5 ml is the metric standard.
  4. The result shows one decimal, which is what matters at this scale.

How it is calculated

The teaspoon is where the ingredient shows most, because the amounts are small and the weights very different:

grams = teaspoons x teaspoon ml x density

A 5 ml teaspoon of table salt weighs 6.1 g; the same teaspoon of instant yeast weighs 3 g, and of cocoa powder 1.8 g. Three ingredients, one spoon, three times the difference.

There is a practical reason to measure rather than weigh at this scale: few domestic scales reliably tell 2 g from 3 g, and with yeast or salt that gap matters.

Worked example

A recipe calls for 2 teaspoons of table salt:

  • Volume: 2 x 5 = 10 ml
  • Table salt density: 1.217 g/ml
  • Weight: 10 x 1.217 = 12.2 g

Use Diamond Crystal kosher salt instead and those same 2 teaspoons weigh only 5.4 g. Swapping one for the other spoon for spoon seasons less than half as much.

Good to know

  • Salt is not interchangeable. Table, kosher and flaky salt weigh very differently by volume. If you change salt, convert by weight.
  • Level spoons. On a teaspoon, heaping can double the amount.
  • Yeast sachets. A standard packet of instant yeast is 7 g, about 2¼ teaspoons.
  • 3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon. True in all three standards.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams in a teaspoon of salt?

About 6.1 g of fine table salt with a 5 ml teaspoon. Diamond Crystal kosher salt is only 2.7 g, Morton kosher 5.4 g.

How many grams in a teaspoon of yeast?

About 3 g of instant yeast. A 7 g sachet is a little over two teaspoons.

How many teaspoons in a tablespoon?

Three, in all three standards. A 15 ml tablespoon is three 5 ml teaspoons.

Is it better to weigh or to measure with spoons?

Below about 5 g, a measuring spoon is usually more reliable than a domestic scale, which rarely resolves to 0.1 g.
